Skip the Office Visit with Direct Access Colonoscopy
Need a screening or repeat colonoscopy? You may be able to bypass the initial doctor visit.
Our gastroenterology specialists now offer convenient direct access for a simple screening colonoscopy, which means if you meet the criteria and are in good health, you can skip the initial office appointment, saving you time and money.
Most patients who need a colonoscopy will meet the criteria for direct access colonoscopy, first-time screening colonoscopies as well as surveillance colonoscopies for prior history of colon polyps.
What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is an exam used to look for changes — such as swollen, irritated tissues, polyps or cancer — in the large intestine (colon) and rectum.
During a colonoscopy, a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope is inserted into the rectum. A tiny video camera at the tip of the tube allows the doctor to view the inside of the entire colon.
If necessary, polyps or other types of abnormal tissue can be removed through the scope during a colonoscopy. Tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken during a colonoscopy as well.
Why Get a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is the single-most important test to prevent or detect colon cancer at an early stage. Colorectal cancer is the 2nd leading cause of U.S. cancer deaths, and it's affecting younger people with alarming frequency.
That's why the American Cancer Society is now recommending that both men and women undergo screening for the disease beginning at age 45 rather than 50.
When found early, colon cancer is 90% treatable.
Who Qualifies for Direct Access Colonoscopy?
You may qualify for direct access colonoscopy if you are:
- In good health.
- Have no chronic health conditions including morbid obesity, heart failure or previous heart attack, COPD, or obstructive sleep apnea.
- Having your first screening colonoscopy or a surveillance colonoscopy for prior history of polyps.
